Weekly Unplugged Project : Alphabet Letters

This week's project was Alphabet Letters. I was so excited because a couple weeks ago I bought a bag of alphabet pasta at Trader Joes and figured we could do something with that.

I decided to have the kids sort the letters out so I wrote each of the letters out on paper. Both kids "helped" although my 2-year old was not as interested. I tried to come up with a variety of things to talk about and practice related to the project. I geared some toward each boy since they are at different levels.

We talked about:
identifying letters
sounds letters make
matching pairs of letters
ordinal numbers
counting
guessing/hypothesizing/estimating
It was a lot of fun. And of course, we still have the pasta to reuse so we are brainstorming other activities.

Hey Tamara - cool project!

Thanks for the post on my blog! I would say - YES - go back to safeway! You can do the promo again and again and pay about $5 per order- and get another $20. It's fun! But, sometimes it's hard for me find healthy items I want to buy. The beans were a great find - they keep a long time and I make lots of soups and chilis. Also the whole grain rice is a good buy and $1. The no-salt canned tomatoes are great too! Good luck! I'm going to head back and spend $20 more (b/c I have 1 $5 catalina) to get more beans and then I'll get another $20 to use on organic milk and stuff.

This is a fabulous idea! Going to keep my eyes open for letter pasta . . . my four year old is very into learning letters lately, so she'd have a good time with this.

I have never seen letter pasta like that. The next time I am in Phoenix or Albuquerque I'll have to visit Trader Joe's and buy some.

This looks like it was a fun and educational project and the pasta idea was quite brilliant. I am sure you'll come up with some more interesting uses for the pasta (please post)...besides alphabet soup of course!

If you try our scavenger hunt, please let me know how it went. I think your oldest will enjoy it.

Happy Monday!

Very neat idea..I think we used up our alphabet pasta in soup, but it does remind me of a puzzle I have
under my desk...hmmm

Love your idea with letter pasta...I know I have some in the cupboard and you have inspired me to dig it out. And to think I was saving it for soup! What was I thinking?

That looks like fn. Whenever we have bought alphabet pasta there have only ever been about eight different letters - never the full alphabet :-(

I saw these at Trader Joe's and was pretty sure my kids wouldn't eat them, but I'm going to pick up a package for play next time. Thanks!

(And in response to your post on my blog, the price of eggs has gone up everywhere. My friend Meredith says that they're $1.95 for a regular dozen at her market, and $3.50 for organic.)
